Chemistry of Batch Reaction Process
A toll manufacturer was operating a batch process consisting of stepwise addition of a number of chemicals to a small stirred tank. The company wished to understand the reaction chemistry and in particular to assess the residual levels of some key materials in the finished product.
JCHEM Design carried out a literature review of the chemistry involved, and created a model of the reaction chemistry to define the species present in the aqueous solution during the batch process and to determine the changes in temperature due to the reactions that were taking place
The model used thermodynamic data found in the literature and validated by simple bench top experiments. Reaction rates were measured and compared to available kinetic data. The model was used to determine the species present in the product, and to estimate the vapour phase level of key species during transport.
